Dear Internet,

This is my second professional print ad. It's a bit boring, in my opinion, but it's what the client wanted. It's funny how that works out; people will pay for something boring, but shy away at some trickier design elements.

It's filled entirely with floating buzzwords. The word solutions is in there three times. Everytime I look at it, I imagine a caveman in a business suit trying to teach small businesses how to use the internet. Cronk. Solutions. Domain. Design. User-friendly. *Pounds Chest*

I guess simplicity is more comfortable for businesses, and ultimately I'm selling adverts to businesses, not to customers.

Dear Internet,

What do you fill your time with?

I took a 10 minute break this morning and decided to take a walk. Carefully, I avoided pulling out my cellular phone or plugging in my iPod. I simply walked around midtown Sacramento, exploring little shops I hadn't noticed before.

The entire time, I kept expecting someone to ask me where I was going. People rushed past me, hurrying towards work, coffee shops, or homes. No one noticing much of anything at all. It was as if I was a spektor; an invisible ghost meandering across the concrete between dozens of distracted people. One young lady made eye contact and paused for a moment, as if she had just noticed that anyone else was on the open street.

I took a bit of a long break and, even as I walked back into the office, I kept expecting someone to reprimand me for taking an extra five minutes. I felt guilty. It was strange.

We have hours and hours and hours to experience the world. What do you spend yours doing? Drawing? Playing games? Paying rent?

The shift from enjoyment to necessity has come gradually. The quiet cup of warm tea turns into the black coffee in the morning to keep you awake. Sucked down quickly in an attempt to get that first morning slap in the face required to make it through the day.

As if the spark of energy might be able to get enough momentum to last you through the day.

I find myself spending less time in the hours, and honestly I'm enjoying myself much more. It isn't until the spring decides to peak out through some clouds that you realize how long you've been cuddled up away from the cold.

Dear Internet,

Does anyone else ever look at the sun, and suddenly realize how strange it is that we are standing on a ball of wet mud, floating in empty murderous space, held in orbit by an invisible force around a ball of insane burning fire 865,000 miles in diameter?

I do.

It's quite a shock while you're having a cigarette on your lunch break.

Epic words

Dear Internet,

The meat hook linguistics of the spoken tongue have always intrigued me.

Words are magical. By blowing hot air past a series of stiff flaps, muscles, and then slapping their tongue around their mouth, humans can convey a massive range of emotions, instructions, sentiments, and visuals. A single word floats through invisible air, bounces off some wet tissue in the ear, sparks some neurons into action, and one person has just communicated something invisible to another person.

It's quite intimate.

To celebrate, I have decided to post some of my favorite words and phrases. Their impact is diminished in text, so I ask that you speak these out loud. Say them slowly. Savor each resonant syllable. Don't be shy. It will be more personal that way.

Unbridled Passion. Tense. Spittle. Muffin. Wrath. Abhor. Lily. Scald. Mushroom. Heart.

...and finally. The most gorgeous pairing of words in the English language. Say these slowly. Enjoy them.

Cellar Door.

Did you say them out loud? Please do.

Language is a silly thing. :3

Dear Internet,

It appears that I have been contracted to drive down to LA this weekend to help Daryl with a modeling gig. NERV Magazine apparently saw these old ass pictures and decided that they wanted me to do a shoot. :)

Dear Internet,

The word of the day is: Arugula

This salad green is high in vitamins A and C. I'm considering supplementing my spinach use with Arugula, but it seems more apt for a sandwich and less appetizing in an omelet.

We shall see.

Dear Internet,

On the subject of animated movies, I thought I would share quick opinion from my childhood.

Don Bluth Films > Disney

Secret of Nimh. All Dogs go to Heaven. An American Tale.

That's what my childhood was made of. :-p

Dear Internet,

A pic on the net reminded me of an old childhood movie. Naturally, I've decided to share it.

Five points to the person who can name where this quote comes from:

"They said there'll be rain, instead we have snow.
When all's said and done. It's fun not to know.
"

Think of it yet?

Even if you didn't guess it, here's the video.

All Dogs Go to Heaven - Let me be surprised.

It should come as no surprise that a bunch of my favorite childhood movies involve some sort of misfit mischief maker.

Why does everyone hate Anchovies?

I'm currently devouring a grilled cheese and anchovy sandwich, and it's delicious. They taste just like tuna.

Dear Internet,

Here are a few interesting things which I learned today:

Some psychologists feel that the internet reflects a human need for social interaction.

[Dr.]Quentzel said creating relationships with others is one of the keys to human happiness, and that even if those connections are occurring online they are better than nothing.

"Obviously there is community building in these forums," Quentzel said. "It may be technologically different from other community building, but it serves the same purpose."

This quote was actually taken from an article on Avatar. But, I felt those quotes were worth sharing.

Enjoy! Make sure to bring it up in conversation, or share it with the rest of the net.

Dear Internet,

I have met most of you in person. Bars. Conventions. Mutual friends. Freak accidents. Whatever the case, I have always been intrigued by the differences in people's personalities online compared to in person. Some folks are brave and opinionated over the net, but the moment you see them face to face they seem shy. Others are thoughtful online, but mostly drunk and insane in person.

What am I like in person, compared to how I am on the internet?

Have you ever heard a recording of your own voice, and been startled by how strange and alien the voice is? One of the most ironic parts of the human experience is just how damn hard it is to get an outside perspective on yourself.

So, what am I like at a glance? Pros? Cons? Do I have a strange social deficiency that I just don't notice? This is the time to be honest. If you tell me, and ask for it, I'll even tell you in return. ;)

Dear Internet,

I've spent the holidays at my parent's house in Brentwood. It's a suburban town. Miles and miles of cookie cutter houses. When I grew up here, it was all fields, now it's all strip malls.

It's been wonderful seeing my family, and my friends in the area have helped me get my thoughts together.

The strangest part about this town is the familiar faces.

I went to a bar with my sister last week, and encountered four people that I knew from high school. I've been there several subsequent times, and every time I run into one or two familiar faces. We talk about how much we've grown up, and what we've experienced in the last few years.

But the eerie parts are the people who have never left the nest. I've run into a dozen familiar faces which are still living in their parent's house, hanging out at the same bars, and doing the same thing that they were doing when I left this corn field town. They walk the streets like specters; distracted husks for the people they wanted to be, trying to find a way to complete unfinished business in the bottom of a bottle of Jack Daniels.

I want the world to be my Jack Daniels.

I haven't made it as far as I would like in the past six years, but I am come a long way. The next six years will be better. I won't settle for less.

Kigs

Dear Internet,

Everyone has loved. Or, at least, has believed that they have loved.

Consider this your opportunity to share that special moment. That singular, incredible moment when you declared your love for one of the other confused creatures on this planet.

This entry is not about me. It is about you. It is a question. Simple, but infinitely complex.

Have you ever loved? You? Truly?

If so, share it. Tell us what lead you to love, and what you experienced. I want to know what you felt, and what caused you to feel that way. Thousands of poets have tried to stick a pin into that word. Here's your chance to define it from your own perspective. If you know someone on your friends list who has something to say, link them to this entry.

What is love?

Share. Leap off the cliff. Connect with your fellow humans.

I anxiously await your viewpoint.

On Mess

Dear Internet,

My little brother is a chaos prodigy. He seems calm enough: quiet, demure. At age 4 and the weight of several house cats, he has never been known to scream, draw on walls, throw toys, erupt into tantrums, or smudge creamy foods all over his face, the table, or the cat. All in all, he's a curious and active little boy.

Except for one thing. He was blessed with the incredible ability to take absolutely nothing, and make a mess out of it. He has been quietly hiding under a step ladder in the corner of my room for the past ten minutes, and the room has fallen to shambles around him with seemingly no direct interaction.

First, it was a scrap of paper. I don't remember where it came from, but suddenly it was on my desk. Then, markers and plastic cups began to manifest on every available flat surface. A glowing Avatar McDonalds toy appeared on my table, seemingly of its own volition. Its cheep transparent plastic body and LEDs blinking mockingly at me. I checked behind me to ensure that was little brother was still there, and he was innocently laying on my bed and reading a Power Ranges book.

He's crafty, that one. I'll have to keep an eye on him.

Truly,
~Kigs
